Abstract

The present study focus on the improvement of the interface properties between solid propellant and different insulation materials made from Nitrile and EPDM rubbers. This property improvement is achieved by increasing the bond strength of present using liner system (PEDCOAT) used between the propellant and insulation material. The liner system is based on Hydroxyl Terminated Poly Butadiene (HTPB). Fillers and crosslinking agents are the other ingredients of this liner system. A new filler system, Zinc oxide tetrapod is introduced to the liner premix for the bond strength improvement.

Different studies were carried out for evaluating the bond strengths such as tensile and peel. The first phase of the work details the synthesis of Zinc Oxide tetrapod from commercially available zinc by vapour transport synthesis [1-4]. Zinc oxide tetrapods of two different particle sizes were synthesized by varying the process parameters. The obtained zinc oxide tetrapod was characterized by Environmental Scanning Electron Microscope (ESEM) images. In the second phase of development, varying concentrations of zinc oxide tetrapod of two different particle size (20 and 40 μm) were introduced to a polyurethane based adhesive composition and interface properties such as Tensile Bond Strength (TBS) and peel strength between the propellant and insulation (Nitrile and EPDM rubber based insulation) were studied.

The studies showed a considerable increase in the peel strength and a marginal increase in tensile bond strength for the particle size 40 μ. In both Nitrile rubbers based and EPDM rubber based insulation shows the same type of improvements described above. The improvement in the strength may be attributed to the characteristic shape of the tetrapod, which is having four hexagonal arms that make a strong bond between the propellant and insulation. The results of trials with 20 μ particle size are not satisfied.
